James Bernard Epps

James B. Epps, 69, of Tampa, Florida, departed this earthly realm on December 24, 2023, in the comfort of his home. Born on August 28, 1954, in Emporia, Virginia, to James G. and Virginia F. Epps, he was the youngest of eight children and a cherished member of his community.

James commenced his educational journey at Greensville County Public School and later graduated from the Naval Academy, where he served as a commissioned officer in the Navy for nine years. His thirst for knowledge led him to Old Dominion University, followed by the completion of a doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University and a postdoctoral stint at the University of Washington.

For 30 years, James dedicated himself to the University of South Florida, leaving an indelible mark as a distinguished faculty member, renowned for his excellence in teaching and mentorship to countless students.

A true renaissance man, James found joy in scholarly pursuits, poetry, music, woodworking, gardening, and the serenity of being on the water. His recent sojourn in Ghana was a testament to his love for connecting with his heritage.

Left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Lauri Wright, and his devoted sons, James G. Epps, II (Molly) and Langston Joshua Epps. Additionally, he is survived by stepdaughters Meghan Wright, Molly Wright, and Addie Coffey (Christopher), along with his siblings Barbara E. Gravely, Betty L. Elder, Brenda L. Alston, and Dorothy Hayes. James leaves behind a legacy embraced by ten nephews, eleven nieces, and a multitude of other relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James G. and Virginia F. Epps, and his siblings Bernice Epps-Burnett, Harold L. Epps, Robert L. Epps, and Franklin E. Epps.

In celebrating James's life, we honor the multifaceted man he was and the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to share in his journey. May he find eternal peace, and may his memories continue to be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
