Evelyn Josephine ‘Josie’ Phillips was born November 3, 1921, in Greensville County, VA to the late John and Ethel Williams. She departed this life on September 1, 2019, at the Parham Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Evelyn received her education in Greensville County. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and became a faithful member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church until her health declined. She served on the Usher Board, Willing Workers Auxiliary, and the Antioch Missionary Ministry.
For many years, Evelyn was a domestic worker for the Robert Bass Family and later worked at the Holiday Day Inn prior to retirement. After retiring, she became a foster grandparent and worked at the Shiloh Baptist Church Day Care Program of Emporia, Virginia. She later joined the Crater Area Senior Program at the Royal Baptist Church and was a very active member.
Evelyn loved her family and the many family reunions held throughout the years at the homestead in Emporia - a tradition started by her parents John and Ethel Williams.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Phillips Sr., one daughter Shirley Ryan, one son Robert Phillips, two grandchildren Monica Milford Williams, Derick Milford, one great grandchild Jahmeique Phillips, four brothers: Johnnie Williams, Curtis Williams, James (Jimmie) Williams and Nathaniel (Pete) Williams.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory: eight children, James Phillips (Toinetta) and Veronica Lewis (Sylvester) both of Emporia, Virginia, Annie Thomas of Hampton, Virginia, Walter Phillips of Cypress, Texas, Lottie Woolfolk, Hazel Phillips, Suzanna Stallings and Brenda Phillips of Richmond, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Michelle Rivera (Daniel), Jamie Phillips, Timeka Phillips, LaShelle King, Ashley Hill, LaTiffany and Slyvester Lewis; eleven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Williams (Belle) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Freddie Williams (Irene) of Emporia, Virginia; eight sisters, Annie Taylor and Clarine Thomas of Emporia, Virginia, Mary Jones of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Magaline Cofield and Mildred Wright both of Norfolk, Virginia, Ollie Harges of Odenton, Maryland, Elnora Uzzelle of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Raddie Jeanette of Chesapeake, Virginia; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
