Helen Lee Obituary

Minister Helen Alston Lee was born in Long Island, New York, on August 24, 1939, to the Pecolia Robinson Alston Watts and Robert Alston. At a very young age, her family relocated to Skippers, Virginia.
Minister Lee attended schools in Greensville County when schools still were segregated. She was a hard worker and was raised in the south where she was taught to pick cotton. Minister Lee truly lived a life of service. Her work life included positions as a cook, a maid, a custodian, a salesperson and a caregiver. Minister Lee truly believed there was never a job too small to be done.
Minister Lee accepted Christ at an early age at Diamond Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board. She also served on the senior choir at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, and as an associate minister, missionary and church mother at Community Mission Church. Minister Lee accepted the call to ministry and performed her trial sermon on November 15, 1998 at Diamond Grove Baptist Church. She was the first female to receive her certificate in ministry at Diamond Grove Baptist Church under Reverend Abraham Walton.
Minister Lee traveled extensively and enjoyed working with 4H. Her favorite hobby was arts and crafts, and also loved to cook. Among Minister Lee’s many specialties were her sweet potato pies, her rolls made from scratch and her famous potato salad.
Minister Lee was preceded in death by her brothers, Roger Alston, Russell Alston, Robert Alston and Charlie Watts. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Russell E. Lee; two son, Jimmy Alston (Norma Jean) and Richard Lee (Gladys); three daughters, Shirley Thomas (Reginald), Susan Jefferson (Albert), and Alice Lee; three sisters, Alberta Alston, Alma Allen and Rebecca Green; two sister-in-law, Etta Alston and Willie Bee Rawlings; two brothers-in-law William Lee and Otis Lee; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.
