"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
—Psalm 23:6
Alvin Lawrence Turner, son of the late Herbert Lawrence Turner and Ruby Cutler Turner, was born on December 12, 1935, in Boykins, Virginia. Raised on the family farm, he received his early education at Southampton County Training School, graduating with the Class of 1954. At a young age, Alvin professed his faith in Jesus Christ and joined Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, a commitment that guided him throughout his life.
Alvin was united in holy matrimony to Nancy Morgan Turner in Boykins, Virginia, and from this union came one daughter, Linda Turner of Cinnaminson, New Jersey. His relationship with Jan Stith Evans brought forth two beloved children, Amanda Evans of Jacksonville, Florida, and Darius Evans of Chester, Virginia. Alvin also lovingly embraced and raised Jan’s son, Travis Stith, as his own.
In his early adulthood, Alvin left Virginia and settled in Cinnaminson, New Jersey, where he began a long and distinguished career with Nabisco. Over the course of more than 20 years, he worked in various capacities, earning the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic and steadfast dedication. He later returned to Boykins to oversee the family farm, where he devoted another 20 years to agricultural work he cherished. Even in retirement, Alvin continued to serve his community, spending 15 years as a bus driver for Southampton County Public Schools.
A man of many interests, Alvin enjoyed bowling, baseball, fishing, hunting, antique cars, and cheering for his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. His passion for life, hard work, and commitment to family left a lasting example for all who knew him.
Alvin leaves to cherish his memory his four children: Linda Turner, Amanda Evans (Cedric), Darius Evans (Shanda), and Travis Stith (Angelnet); three sisters: Yvonne Rieves, Ann Mason (Del), and Eloise Pearson; one brother: Glenn Turner (Debra); and his devoted long-term partner, Evangeline Harrison. He is also survived by a host of loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mr. Turner's tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
