“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,
shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
~ II Timothy 4: 7 - 8
Angelina Alfreida Ferby answered God’s call from earthly labor unto sweet eternal rest on Monday, July 10, 2023 at Bon Secours Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA. She was born on May 19, 1954, to the late William Henry and Helen Tucker Ferby in Newport News, Virginia. After the unexpected death of her mother, her father moved her and her two brothers to live with their maternal grandparents on the family farm in Emporia, VA.
Angelina was educated in the Greensville County Public School System and furthered her education at Southside Virginia Community College. After graduating from college Angelina began her career working for the Greensville County Public School System at E. W. Wyatt Middle School as the Administrative Assistant in the Guidance Department. She also worked at the Greensville County Teachers Credit Union. She retired from the Greensville County Public School System after 48 years of service. Angelina loved working with children and introduced them to educational opportunities inside and outside of the school system.
Angelina was very instrumental in the development of the Upward Bound Program in the county and introduced kids to the program at Virginia State University. She belonged and volunteered in so many roles and organizations in the community including, The Order of the Eastern Star, The Fuller Center, Campaign Finance Director, Girls Scouts of America, 4-H Club Leader, and was on the planning committee for the Greensville County High School Mass Reunion Committee. Angelina regularly checked on the sick and shut-in throughout the community, often giving rides to the doctor’s office and delivering groceries and medicine when needed.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized and became a member of the then Antioch Baptist Church, currently known as Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. As a member of the church, Angelina was a Trustee and held the Office of Secretary, Church Financial Secretary, member of the Missionary Ministry and was the Acting Secretary, President of the Young Adult Ministry, and member of the scholarship committee. She was the glue that held Antioch Church together… If it needed to be done, she made sure it was done.
Angelina leaves to cherish her memories: two brothers, Elonzo E. Ferby (Janice) of Emporia, VA and Michael A. Ferby of Annandale, VA; two nieces, Michelle Cowles, Whitney Ferby-Taylor (James) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three nephews, Timothy Paige and Matthew Cowles both of Emporia, VA and Mark Cowles of Norfolk, VA; greatniece and nephew, Mariah Cowles and Nicholas Cowles both of Emporia, VA; several dear cousins, Carrie A. Tucker and Donnell Tucker both of Emporia, VA, Cornell Williams (Darlene), Angela Williams Friend (George) and Sharon Williams all of Richmond, VA and Steven Hatchett of Newport News, VA; one aunt, Betty Ann Williams of Richmond, VA; one brother-in-law, Westley Paige of Richmond, VA; two sisters-in- law, Barbara Williams of Emporia, VA and Elizabeth Galloway (Tyrone) of Baltimore, MD and a very special cousin and brother-at-heart, Charles Gillmore Gilliam.
She loved all her godchildren, and she had many: Tonya Wright, Tia Davis, Neal Noel, Alexis Astrop, Hunter Astrop, Ciara Wright and especially Christina Wright, who was like her shadow and affectionately referred to Angelina as, “Boo”. In addition, her special friends, Helena Johnson-Henson, Juanda Deloatch, Brenda Gordon and Doretha Allen; a host of close cousins, relatives and friends too numerous to list.
