Arthur Thomas Hicks, born on December 31, 1941, in Greensville County, Virginia, to the late Robert Hicks and Carrie Brown Allen, peacefully departed this earthly life on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in the serenity of his home.
Despite the loss of his father at a young age, Arthur’s mother instilled in him the love of God, and he was baptized at an early age at Macedonia Baptist Church, where he remained a dedicated supporter throughout his life. Educated in the public schools of Greensville County, Arthur began working on the farm as a young boy. Driven by a desire to better himself and support his family and friends, he embarked on the first of many trips to Newark, New Jersey, driving his 1949 Ford.
On April 13, 1968, Arthur married his beloved Bertha Woodley, and together they enjoyed numerous trips, as Arthur had a passion for travel. Known for making friends with almost everyone he encountered, Arthur found employment at the Ford Motor Company in 1970 with the assistance of a good friend. He worked there until his retirement in 2004, after which he returned to his hometown of Emporia.
Arthur and Bertha, married for 54 years, were never without a beloved pet, with his last dog, Princess, preceding him in death in 2021.
Preceding him in death were: his mother, Carrie Brown-Allen; sister, Lilly Mae Plumb; brothers, John Hicks and Morris Hicks; and sister, Lorraine Lenard.
Cherishing Arthur’s memory are: his wife, Bertha; brothers, Mathew Allen (Josephine) of Richmond, Virginia and Bishop Paul Allen, Sr. (Jackie) of Cary, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Alice Allen (Lemon) of Jarratt, Virginia and Dorothy Bowser (James) of Emporia, Virginia; nieces and nephews, special to his heart, including Bertha Pulley (Sam) of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Irving Lenard (Queenie) of Kansas City, Missouri; James Lenard of Laurel, Maryland; Dennis Lenard (Cindy) of Newark, New Jersey; Wayne Graves of Richmond, Virginia; Wayne Lenard (Michelle) of Jarratt, Virginia; Tracy O’Neil (Hershel) of White Plains, Maryland; and Stacy & Calcy Gray of Gaston, North Carolina.
Fond memories of family dinners, summer cookouts, and joyful times with his sister Mae’s children of Newark, New Jersey, his nieces and nephews will be treasured by Arthur’s family. In spirit, he will continue to watch over his goddaughters, Lisa Thomas and Victoria Steward of Plainville, New Jersey. Numerous caring friends, nieces, nephews, and other relatives remain to cherish the memory of Arthur—a loving husband, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
