We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the
body, and to be present with the Lord. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:8 (KJV)
Benjamin Harrison Barnes, beloved son of the late Benjamin Barnes and Emma Rogers Barnes Lyons, began his life’s journey on Wednesday, August 17, 1932, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He received his education in the Wayne County Public School System.
In April 1956, Benjamin answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He dedicated two years to his nation before being honorably discharged in April 1958.
Later in life, Benjamin met and married the love of his life, Ethelene Newsome. Their union was blessed with two wonderful sons, Eric Barnes and John Gregory Barnes.
Throughout his life, Benjamin was affectionately known by several nicknames. His loving wife called him “Harrison,” his sons fondly referred to him as “Pops,” his grandchildren cherished him as “Papa,” and his church family honored him as “Brother Barnes.”
In 1970, Benjamin and Ethelene moved to New Jersey, where he worked for many years before retiring as a Vault Officer at PNC Bank. That same year, Benjamin embraced his faith and was baptized as a member of the Newark Church of Christ under the leadership of Dr. Eugene Lawton. During his time there, he served faithfully as the church’s van driver and as a member of The Johnson Singers Group. When the family later relocated to Virginia, they joined the Emporia Church of Christ, where Benjamin continued to serve under the leadership of Minister Marvin Bailey.
Brother Barnes was a man of deep dedication—to his family, his church, and his friends. Known for his quiet demeanor and profound wisdom, he was a man of few words but great impact. He never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. As his health declined, Brother Barnes’ faith remained unwavering. He fought the good fight and now rests in peace, having earned his just reward.
On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in the tranquility of his home, Benjamin Harrison Barnes peacefully entered eternal rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Eric; his brother, Huel Rogers (Ethel); his sister, Rose Smith; and brothers-in-law, John Earl Newsome and James Newsome (Sherri).
Cherished memories of Benjamin will forever remain in the hearts of his devoted wife, Ethelene, his son John “Greg” Barnes, his grandson Jarrell Benjamin Barnes of Virginia, and his three great-grandchildren, Adele Barnes, Kira Barnes, and Jarrell Barnes, Jr. He is also fondly remembered by his nieces, Aldrena Rogers of Panama City, Florida, and Deirdre Council (Harold) of Wake Forest, North Carolina; his nephews, Howard Rogers (Ella), David Best (Darlene), Russell Rogers, and Stacey Best, all of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Johnny Best of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Merwyn Smith (Stephanie) of Lagrange, North Carolina; as well as other relatives and friends.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mr. Barnes' tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
