Benny Lee Crumpler, Sr., was the eldest of six children born to the parentage of Mary Pullen Crumpler-White and the late Benjamin F. Crumpler. He began his journey through life on Thursday, June 22, 1944 in San Angelo, Texas.
As life progressed, Benny relocated to Virginia, where he graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond. After which, he enlisted in the United States Army - Division of The Big Red 1. He served his country faithfully, from June 30, 1961 to June 23, 1964; before being Honorably Discharged.
‘Bill Lee’, as he was affectionately called by his loving family and friends, pursued a degree in spinal cord injury. He later graduated from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York. ‘Bill Lee’ was a very smart man. He gained a wealth of knowledge during his military service and during his travels throughout the United States and abroad. He frequently shared his wisdom with those who he came in contact with.
“In tears we saw you sinking, we saw you fade away. You suffered much in silence, you fought so hard to stay. You faced your task with courage, your spirit did not bend. But you still kept on fighting, until the very end. God saw you getting tired, when a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you; and whispered ‘Come to me!’ On Monday, May 30, 2022; while in the serenity of his home, our dear loved one peacefully transitioned from this earthly life unto eternal life. In addition to his father, ‘Bill Lee’, was preceded in death by: a brother, Benjamin Crumpler, Jr.; sister, Mary ‘Bell’ Crumpler Campbell; niece, Gloria ‘Jean’ Crumpler and great-nephew, Jaquan Crumpler.
We thought of you today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and the day before that too. We think of you in silence and often speak your name. Now all we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping and we have you in our hearts: three children, Benny L. Crumpler, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, Ronise Crumpler of Douglasville, Georgia and Coretta (Jeffrey) Howard of Garland, North Carolina; son-at-heart, Lionel Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother, Mary Crumpler-White of Emporia, Virginia; siblings, Linda Bailey (Minister Marvin Bailey) and Blanche Lowery both of Emporia, Virginia and Timothy Crumpler of Richmond, Virginia; special friend, Jesse Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
