Bettie Wright Obituary

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

—Psalm 23:6

On Saturday, October 12th, 2024, Bettie Johnson Battle Wright peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was 85 years old.

Bettie was born on Monday, May 1st, 1939, in Emporia, Virginia, to the late Josh and Virginia Johnson. She graduated from Greensville County Training School in 1958 and dedicated her life to caring for others, both as a homemaker and working for many local families. Bettie had a deep passion for gardening, surrounding her home with beautiful flowers until her health began to decline.

Bettie was first married to the late Preston Battle, Jr., and together they were blessed with one son, Preston Battle III. After the tragic loss of her husband in 1966, Bettie returned to her hometown of Emporia, where she began to rebuild her life. During this time, she made a heartfelt promise that she would not remarry until her son graduated from high school. True to her word, after Preston’s graduation, Bettie met and married Lloyd Wright, opening a new chapter in her life filled with love and companionship.

A devoted mother, Bettie worked tirelessly to provide for her son and was present at every one of his sporting events, ensuring he always felt her unwavering love and support. Her strength and commitment were hallmarks of her character.

Bettie was also a faithful and active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she served in the honored role of Church Mother. Her faith was central to her life, and she continued to attend services as much as her health would allow.

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Helen Weaver, Robert Davis Field, Richard Johnson, Bernard Johnson, Randolph Johnson, Bennie Lee Johnson, and Roosevelt Johnson; her brothers-in-law: Albert Ray Battle, Paulus Battle, Robert Battle, Lloyd Weaver, Friendoll Tucker, and Joseph Wright; her sisters-in-law: Josephine Draughorn, Dorothy Collier, Rementia Johnson, and Annie Lee Wright; and her stepdaughter, Peggy Garner.

Bettie leaves behind to cherish her memory: her devoted son, Preston Battle III, and her loving daughter-in-law, Bernadette; her loving, cherished grandchildren, Preston Battle IV and Brooke Iman Battle; her sister, Rosezellar Tucker of Richmond, Virginia; her sisters-in-law: Bernethia Callis, Carol Dugger Lee, Joyce Lewis, Margaret Sumler, and Lottie Johnson; her brothersin-law: James Battle Sr., Charles Battle, and David Battle; her stepsons, Clarence Wright (Jean) of Emporia, Virginia, and James Garner; her stepdaughters Chris Harrison (Greg) of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Thelma Short (John) of Henrico, Virginia, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Bettie’s legacy of love, faith, and strength will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
