“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only but unto all them also that love His appearing.” — II Timothy 4:7-8
On Sunday, January 20, 1946, Betty Jean Mason Atkins was born to the late Lamar and Willia Mason. Raised in a Christian home, Betty was introduced to the Lord early in life. At Salem Baptist Church in Emporia, Virginia, she accepted Christ and joined the ministry as a young girl. There, she was taught the Word of God, and her spiritual gifts were lovingly nurtured.
Education held a valued place in the Atkins household. Betty received her formal education through the Greensville County Public School System, attending R.R. Moton School and later graduating from E.W. Wyatt High School in Emporia, Virginia.
In 1965, Betty united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, the late James Alfred Atkins, Sr. Their union was blessed with three beautiful children, who became the center of her world. As life unfolded, Betty embraced the call to provide for her family and entered the workforce, dedicating herself over the years to various places of employment including Abel Lumber, Reste Motel, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, and Greensville Correctional Center. She also played a pivotal role in managing W.L. Market for several years.
Betty was known for her warmth, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She found great joy in cooking and spending quality time with loved ones, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. On Friday, October 10, 2025, Betty peacefully crossed the threshold from this life to eternal rest.
She was a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a kind hearted woman who touched the lives of all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Atkins, Sr.; two brothers, Larry Mason and Willie Mason Sr.; and four sisters, Shirley Edge, Virginia Allen (affectionately known as Gin Lee), Nancy Atkins, and Lily Mae Conner.
Her legacy of love and faith continues through her children: one daughter, Stephanie Atkins, and two sons, James Atkins Jr. and Percy Atkins, all of Emporia, Virginia. She also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren: Shonta Mangrum, Crystal Mangrum, Tramaine Gillus, Cache Smith, and MiAngel Atkins; along with twelve great-grandchildren: SaRiyah Freeman, ZyRiannah Freeman, Khole Turner, Somaya Doyle, Daviona Givens, Precious Turner, Chase Powell, Jewels Smalls, Meyon Smalls, Willow Smalls, Siah Pitt, and Zari Doyle.
In addition, Betty lovingly opened her heart to foster children Angela Brookes, Kevin Mason, and Chanda Mason. She is also survived by one brother, Lamar Mason Jr. (Paulette Mason), and two sisters, Thelma Conner (Edward Lee Conner) and Diana Mayfield (Barry Mayfield), all of Emporia, Virginia. A host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends also remain to honor her memory and celebrate the life she so graciously lived
