Brenda Lee Atkins-Gatling departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 5, 2021 at Bon Secours Saint Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and dedicated sister.
Brenda was born on July 6, 1961 in Northampton County, North Carolina to the late Coley Lee Atkins and Annie Mae Adams Atkins. She joined Salem Baptist Church at an early age. She dutifully served on the Junior Usher Board and the Kitchen Ministry.
Brenda completed the nursing assistance program and graduated from Greensville County Public Schools. After graduation, she pursued her education at Halifax Community College in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina where she earned an Associate’s Degree.
Brenda later attended St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. Brenda’s journey as a healthcare professional began when she became employed with Avis B. Adams Convalescent Center as a certified nursing assistant for many years. Opportunities then led her to the Virginia Department of Corrections as a Rehabilitation Counselor, Jackson Field Group Home as a Case Manager, and District 19 Community Services Board and New Journey Family Services as a mental health support provider. Brenda worked in the mental health field for 10 plus years before she retired.
On August 21, 1993, Brenda was united in Holy Matrimony to Vicktory Gatling. Cherishing her loving and wonderful memories are: two loving daughters, Vicktoria Breonna Mae and De’Ja Breanne Gatling; a sweet god-daughter, who was deeply loved as a daughter, Amecia D. Slade (Kye) and a darling grand-daughter, Alayna Kamiyah Lee Slade; two beloved sisters, JoAnn Tucker (Edward) and Patty D. Atkins; one brother-in-law, Castile Gatling (Tonya); two sisters-in-law, Terry Gatling and Charity Deloatch; three aunts, Gladys Cain, Pearly Harrison and Nadine Doyle; a host of nieces, nephews, many cousins, relatives and friends.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mrs. Atkins-Gatling tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
