Remembering Buford....
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
~ Revelation 21: 4
With hearts full of gratitude for his life and legacy, we remember Buford Claiborne, a man whose resilience, candor, and quiet strength inspired all who knew him. Born on October 13th, 1953, to the late Harry T. Claiborne and Verlie Prince Claiborne, Buford’s journey was one marked by determination, service, and enduring love. On July 30th, 2025, he passed away peacefully at a rehabilitation services facility in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Though life presented its share of challenges, Buford faced them with honesty, humility, and perseverance. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
Buford was educated in the Greensville County Public School System and later earned his GED from Big Bend Community College following his enlistment in the United States Army. During his military service, he was stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he proudly served as part of the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division. After completing his service, Buford built a meaningful life through his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for those he loved. He worked with Kugel & Sons, Greensville Memorial Hospital, and most recently, Bearings in Petersburg, Virginia. Buford was also well known in his community for offering a helping hand—frequently assisting neighbors such as Dr. Walker and Ms. Wylie with yard work and odd jobs. His acts of quiet service spoke volumes about his character.
In 1974, while stationed at Fort Bragg, Buford met Jacqueline Moore at Fayetteville State University. Their connection deepened over time, especially during visits to Maryland, and on Saturday, January 13th, 1979, they were united in marriage at Poplar Mount Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Virginia, under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Abraham I. Walton. Their union was blessed with one son, Brian Dennis Claiborne, who remained the pride and joy of Buford’s life.
Buford was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Willie Prince, Joe Earl, Harold, James, and Wayne Claiborne, and his sisters Clara Crawford, Edith Robinson, Linda Claiborne, Wilma Johnson, and Deloris Claiborne. He was also preceded in death by his sisters-in-law Loretta Monk and Judy Moore, as well as his brothers-in-law Michal Monk, Vernon Moore, and David Moore.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and strength. He is survived by his son, Brian Dennis Claiborne; his daughter-at-heart, Terria Moore; one sister, Audrey Brown, who shared his love for gardening and often joined him in yard work; and two brothers, Tony Claiborne (Donetta) and Bobby Claiborne, with whom he shared a passion for sports and watching games. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Byron Moore, Courtney, Cordaryl, Keonte Broadnax, Quientin Maceo Nicholson, Karen Chatman, Labria, Brian Jr., Nevaeh, and Roy Claiborne, along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Though Buford expressed his love more through action than words, his family and friends always felt the depth of his care and devotion. His life was one of integrity, quiet sacrifice, and lasting impact. He will be forever remembered, deeply cherished, and profoundly missed.
