A TIME TO BE BORN
Calvin Coolidge Tyler, Sr., a native of Greensville County, Virginia, was born on June 11th, 1924, to the late Clara (Clarie) Joyner and Deacon Judge Tyler, Sr. Calvin was blessed to celebrate his 100th birthday on June 11th, 2024. On Thursday, November 7th, 2024, the angel of death touched Calvin, and he left his earthly body for his heavenly life, where there is neither moth nor decay. He often said, “I am ready when the Lord calls me home.”
A TIME TO PLANT
He accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and became a member of Little Shiloh Baptist Church in Jarratt before joining Morning Star Baptist Church in Jarratt, Virginia. He lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a short time before returning home to Jarratt. Calvin and his brothers inherited powerful voices for a cappella gospel music and were known as The Tyler Brothers of Jarratt. They were blessed to sing in gospel programs with the famous Dixie Hummingbirds and the Five Blind Boys; later, that musical talent passed to the next generation, and he sang with his sons and nephews in a group called the Gospel Tears of Jarratt for over thirty years. His favorite song, “Don’t Forget the Prayer,” was sung at his 100th birthday celebration. He was immensely proud of his family’s musical legacy. As a proud grandfather, he often sang with the third generation of Tyler singers, which included his grandchildren, The Gospel T’s of Jarratt. He was a man of few words but was always appreciative and thankful for any kindness shown. He was honored by Morning Star Baptist Church for serving seventy years on the Usher Board and was recognized by his church, community family, and the Sussex County Board of Supervisors for reaching his centennial milestone.
A TIME TO EMBRACE AND LOVE
Calvin and Virginia Mozelle Jefferson were united in holy matrimony on November 26th, 1945. They have been married for seventy-eight years and were blessed with seven children. Calvin is remembered for his simple lifestyle. He worked for many years as a farmer and retired from Tredgar Steel Company in 1975. He enjoyed singing, playing the game Trouble, gardening, cutting grass, building, and could fixany broken lawn mower. Most importantly, he often told his children and grandchildren that he was proud of them all. He was not a man of wealth but was rich in service and spirit.
