Charles Edward Mayberry was born on December 19, 1930 in Mount Jackson, Virginia; youngest child and only son of the late Thomas Franklin and Mary Green Mayberry. He was known as "Sonny" by his family and friends. Sonny began his education at the Mount Jackson Grad School in Mount Jackson, Virginia, and continued his education at the Grand View School in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. He graduated from Page Jackson High School in Charleston, West Virginia. Sonny attended Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia, there he met and later married his wife of 53 years, Golden Hortense Young. He joined the United States Army in 1954. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Sonny began his civilian service by joining the U.S. Postal Service. Later, he joined the U.S. Department of State, where he spent 35 years of public service. He travel to Africa, Asia and Europe. He retired in 1989. Charles Mayberry was independent, strong minded, and straight forward. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, brother and friend, and a dedicated member of the People's Community Baptist Church. His was a beautiful spirit that will be missed. He was called to rest on March 14, 2015. Left cherish his memory are his devoted sister, Audrey Lucas; his loving niece, Sharon Lucas; his loving nephew, Russelle Lucas; sister in law, Virginia Young; numerous cousins and loving friends.
