Clifton Wiggins, Sr. Obituary

“JAZZ is not just music, it’s a way of LIFE,

it’s a way of BEING, a way of THINKING.”

~ Nina Simone

Clifton James Wiggins, Sr., departed this life on Monday, April 15, 2024. He entered this world on September 20, 1958, born to the late Mary Celestine and Floyd ‘Jack’ Wiggins, Sr. His formative years were spent in the Greensville County School System, before graduating from Petersburg Senior High School. A dedicated serviceman, Clifton served his country for 12 years in the United States Army Reserves, stationed in various locations including Ft. Jackson, South Carolina,   Ft. Lee, Virginia, and with the 62 Echo unit in Reno, Nevada.

It was in Reno where Clifton transitioned into civilian life, working backstage in Harrah’s Casino alongside renowned artists such as James Brown, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and BB King. Additionally, Reno marked the beginning of his trucking career. A significant milestone during this time was the birth of his son, Clifton James Wiggins, Jr., from a previous marriage.

Clifton's trucking endeavors predominantly involved hauling cars, and in his later years, he found fulfillment in delivering Corvettes via the Bowling Green, Kentucky terminal of Jack Cooper Transport. Forced to halt his driving career due to lung cancer, Clifton dedicated his time to restoring two cherished vehicles: a Camaro and a Corvette. Beyond this, he enjoyed fishing, landscaping, maintaining his lawn, and renovating homes.

Known for his culinary prowess, Clifton was celebrated as the Chicken Muddle master of the Wiggins family and friends, often preparing the dish for gatherings and sometimes just because.   He often shipped his carefully prepared - tasty dishes and special barbecue sauce across the country to former colleagues. He had a discerning palate, a huge sweet tooth and an affinity for old-fashioned candy, pies, cakes, and assorted cookies, which he always kept around the house.

Yet, if there was one defining passion, it was Clifton's love for Jazz music. Renowned in both the Falling Run and Halifax, North Carolina neighborhoods for playing Jazz loudly on weekends, he delighted in sharing his extensive knowledge of the genre with others. His favorites included Boney James, Vincent Ingala, Linsey Webster, Masa, Will Downing, Kenny Garrett, Richard Elliot, Club 1600, and above all, Brian Culbertson.

Clifton was preceded in death by four siblings: Clyde Whitfield, Mary Battle, Calvin Wiggins, and Charles Wiggins. He is survived by his son, Clifton James Wiggins, Jr., and two grandsons, Quincy and Bishop. His niece, Keona Wiggins, who provided devoted care throughout his illness, while his friend, Shardell Lewis offered unwavering support. Clifton was deeply grateful for the steadfast presence of his brother, Herman Wiggins (Zenell), throughout his treatment.

In addition, Clifton leaves behind siblings, Audrey Cook (Harry), Floyd Wiggins Jr., Stella Hines, Ben Wiggins (Patricia), Frank Wiggins (Andrei), Larry Wiggins, and Joe Wiggins (Andrea). He is also survived by two uncles, Frank Manning (Sandra) and Joe Manning; one aunt, Mabel ‘Puggie’ Ratcliffe, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, cherished neighbors - Mrs. Simmons, Mike Davis, and William Dunlow, and his trucking companions - Bernardo, Phil Thompson, Carlos, and Jorge.

Clifton's warmth and outgoing nature endeared him to many, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
