Colleen Turner Obituary

On Monday, February 22, 2021, our beloved Colleen Marie Turner, departed life at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. Loving memories of our Mom, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Friend and confidant, will always be in our thoughts and forever in our hearts.

Colleen was born August 31, 1946, to the late Harry Ashburn Minnis (Harry) and Laura ReDella Minnis (Della). Colleen graduated from Montgomery High School in West Virginia; Colleen was a very loving person and could often be found providing care for her siblings. She considered herself her younger siblings' second mother. As a testament to her selflessness, she left nursing school, with only two weeks until graduation, to care for her ill father, so her mother could continue to provide for her siblings. Colleen gave her life to Christ at an early age. For Colleen, the church kept her grounded, flushed out the burdens of life, provided a bedrock of faith and would give answers to her deepest needs.

Colleen met and married the late Everett Lee Turner in Washington, D.C., in 1968 and welcomed his children, Pamela, Valerie, Robin, Bruce, Virginia, Randolph, Michelle, and Oris (Scott). Everett and Colleen eventually welcomed together Kevin, Donna, Everett and Pauline. Colleen worked as a computer programmer for the Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters and then the National Weather Service at Andrews Air Force Base.  She would eventually shift her focus to caring for disabled youth, caring for them with the same enthusiasm as she did when caring for her father, siblings, and her own children.  Colleen would continue to give of herself and open her home and heart up to anyone in need, family and friends alike all knew that "Mrs. Colleen" had your back.  Colleen wasn't monetarily wealthy, but was one of the richest in love.

In addition to her parents and husband, Colleen was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Crook and Sherdina 'Ann' Henderson and brothers, Harry Lewis, Chester and Robert.

Colleen will be missed, treasured, and celebrated continually in the memories of: her children, Kevin and Donna Nicholson both of Emporia, Virginia, Everett of Triangle, Virginia and Pauline Turner; her grandchildren, Jasmine, Jalesa, Xavion ‘Fat-Fat’, Asia ‘Tink’, Xzorian ‘Fresh’ Xavier ‘Mouse’ and Everett Jr. ‘Bugga’; her sisters, Chiquita Pearson and Shirley Collins; her brothers, Johnny English and Larry Venton; a host of other loving relatives and friends.
