Deaconess Florence Hicks Obituary

Deaconess Florence Lee Dugger Hicks, departed this life on Sunday, January 24, 2021.  Florence was preceded in death by her parents, William Frank and Pennie Spruill Dugger.  She was born in Greensville County, VA on March 25, 1926.

At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ, was baptized and joined Mars Hill Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member.  At Mars Hill she actively participated on the Deaconess Board, Senior Choir, Missionary Circle and Pastor’s Aide Ministry.

She was united in holy matrimony to Robert Andrew Hicks Sr. on April 5, 1947.  This union was blessed with three children; Robert Jr., Margie and David.

Florence was a stay at home mom until her baby, David, began school.  She started her career as a cook working at Robert’s Motel, Sportsman Restaurant and Zion Elementary School.  When Belfield Elementary School was being built, Principal Ulysses Russell asked her to come with him and be the Manager of the Cafeteria and she did. When her husband became ill, she retired to care for him.  Florence was a great cook.  Her nieces and nephews would often come to her for advice on a dish and her recipes (specialties and most requested were rolls, sweet potato pie and fruit cake).

Florence loved her family.  She was close to all her siblings, but especially close to her sisters, Bea and Lou.  They were called the “Golden Girls”.  Florence and Lou were together so much and resembled each other that the cashier in grocery stores would ask one “didn’t you just come through the line”. When Lou was at Florence’s house, the family could not tell which one answered the phone.  Not even their own children.  Shopping once while vacationing, Lou looked in the mirror and asked “you see anything you like” thinking she was talking to Florence; but it was her in the mirror.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Andrew Hicks, Sr. (1989).  She was the last of her siblings to cross over. Brothers, John Allen, William Henry, Bennie Frank and Roy Grant Dugger.  Her sisters, Beatrice Hall and Pennie Lou Harris.

Cherishing her memory are her children, Robert A Hicks Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Margie Hicks Heath and David Hicks both Knightdale, NC;  a devoted sister-in-law, Ida Mae Davis of Emporia, VA; her grandchildren, Y Nichole Cooke Coburn (Corey) of Raleigh NC, Ashley Hicks Moore of Augusta, GA, Matthew Hicks of Garner, NC and Lisa Downes of Atlanta GA; her great-grandchildren,  Kayla Paige  and Mia Marie Coburn  of Raleigh, NC and Corey C. Coburn, Jr.  of Greenville, NC;  host of nieces, nephews and friends, who will miss her deeply.
