Deaconess Mary Ann (Banks) Smith

On Friday, April 17th, 2026, the Lord, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, opened the gates of Heaven and welcomed home His faithful servant, Mary Ann Smith—a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. Mary Ann transitioned peacefully while under the care of Southern Virginia Medical Center in Emporia, Virginia.

 Mary Ann was born on Friday, August 16th, 1946, in Emporia, Virginia, to the late Howard W. Banks, Sr. and the late Virginia Atkins Banks, whose loving union nurtured a foundation of faith, compassion, and strength that she carried throughout her life.

She received her education through the Greensville County Public School System and proudly graduated from Edward W. Wyatt High School in 1965. Mary Ann went on to dedicate over 30 years of distinguished service to the United States Department of Education, Office of General Counsel, where she served as a Special Needs Specialist. Her career reflected her deep commitment to helping others and advocating for those in need.

Mary Ann was united in marriage to Detective Roy Smith of Washington, DC, and together they shared a life grounded in love, respect, and devotion.

At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a devoted member of Rising Star Baptist Church. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She faithfully served on the Deaconess Board and found great joy in working for the Lord and praising Him for His many blessings.

Mary Ann’s vibrant spirit and warm personality touched all who knew her. She found joy in cooking, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. Ever active and generous, she was always willing to lend a helping hand—even in times when her own strength was limited. Her selflessness and loving nature defined her character and left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; her sister, Phyllis Powell; and her brothers, Matthew Banks and Stephen J. Banks, Sr.

 Mary Ann also endured the profound loss of her devoted daughter, Michelle Denise Spence Jaleel, a kind and loving soul whose light continues to shine in the hearts of those who knew her. Today, we find comfort in knowing that mother and daughter are reunited in eternal peace.

 She leaves to cherish her precious memories her beloved granddaughter, Zaara Viviana Jaleel, and her devoted son-in-law, Umer (“Joe”) Jaleel of Fort Washington, Maryland. She is also lovingly remembered by her brother, Howard W. Banks, Jr. (Arlene) of Annapolis, Maryland; her sisters, Deloris Banks of Manassas, Virginia, and Nora E. Banks of Chester, Virginia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
