Dexter Jones Obituary

“Your life was a BLESSING, Your memory a TREASURE,

You are LOVED beyond words and missed beyond MEASURE.”

Dexter Aaron Jones, son of the late Willie John Jones and Susie Hortense High Jones, was born on Sunday, June 3, 1956 in Halifax County, North Carolina.

Dexter was educated through the Roanoke Rapids City School System. At a tender age, he accepted Christ, was baptized and he united in Christian fellowship with First Baptist Church of (Hodgestown), Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country from December 10, 1973 to February 15, 1974, before being Honorably Discharged.

“...Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (Joshua 1: 9) Dexter was a kind and giving person. He loved people and never met a stranger. He was also a true jokester-at-heart, who kept everyone laughing. However, he knew when to be serious, as it was needed to land employment. Dexter was the first African American Firefighter with the City of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He later became gainfully employed with CSX Corporation, from which he retired.

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” (Maya Angelou) Early in life, Dexter met the love of his life, Vivian Banks. They were united in Holy Matrimony on Saturday, November 30, 1985 and shared 37 years of marital bliss.

"Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what’s to be, A resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, Different paths along the way, We all were meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay… Our destination is a place, Far greater than we know. For some the journey is quicker, For some the journey’s slow. And when the journey finally ends, We’ll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting peace, Together with the Lord." On Friday, January 13, 2023. Dexter departed this life’s journey and entered into eternal rest. In addition to his parents, Dexter was preceded in death by two siblings, Donati R. High, Sr. and Debra J. Bennett.

Your life was full of loving deeds, forever thoughtful of our special needs. Today and tomorrow, our whole life through, we will always love and cherish you.
