Doretha Epps Obituary

Doretha Yvonne Pegram Epps, age 73, transitioned peacefully on Sunday, January 24th, 2021, at John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, VA. She was born on November 14th, 1947 to the late John Henry Pegram and Dorothy Mae Harris Pegram.

Doretha was a proud graduate of E.W. Wyatt High School (Class of 1966). After graduation, she traveled to New York to follow her dreams and begin a career in Business. On February 24th , 1968, she married Daniel Gillus. To this union, a son, Darrin Maurice, and a daughter, Dalayna Rochelle were born. After returning to Emporia, she began working at Greensville Memorial Hospital in various clerical positions. She was known as a kind and caring coworker, and received numerous awards for her excellent customer service. She was also employed at Virginia State University, Greensville Department of Social Services, and Greensville Correctional Center for many years.

On August 16th, 1986, Doretha joined in holy matrimony to James Barnard Epps at Saint James Episcopal Church. They joined Shiloh Baptist Church and later became active members of Rising Star Baptist Church. Doretha served as deaconess, a member of the missionary ministry, and pastor’s AIDE.

Following retirement, Doretha devoted most of her time traveling and engaging in activities with her precious grandchildren. She loved her family and was always there when they needed her. She will forever be remembered for her beautiful smile and gentle spirit. There is no doubt that Doretha is in Heaven, rejoicing with her parents, son-in-love, Quentin Chandler, Sr., and other family and friends who have gone on to Glory.

She is survived by: her devoted husband of 34 years, James Bernard Epps of the home; one son, Darrin Gillus (Angela) of Falls Church, VA; one daughter, Dalayna Gillus Chandler of Virginia Beach VA; five grandchildren, Quentin, Jr. (Sunema), Kayla, Devin, Cameron, and Caleb; one great-granddaughter, Zion; two sisters, Mable Shell (Alvin, Sr.); and Pamela Scott (Anthony); sisters-in-law, June Epps Pearson, Anita Epps Anderson, and Judith Perkins Epps; brothers-in-law, Robert Kenneth Epps and Eddie Pearson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
