Doretha Carbitt Spates was born to the late Hazel Brown Johnson and William Alexander Carbitt. She was an only child to this union. Later Hazel married William Alfred Johnson and Doretha gained three sisters Gladys Heath, Cora Johnson and four brothers, Edward Johnson, Henry Johnson, Keith Johnson, all preceded her in death, Margaret Johnson and Steven Johnson of Philadelphia, PA.
Doretha married Howard Ervin Spates, Jr. December 10, 1968. The couple raised six beautiful children together. She leaves to cherish her memories: Theresa Carbitt, Ricky Carbitt (Glorina), Glenn Carbitt, Shandell Spates, Jennifer Avent all of Emporia, VA, Linesther Carbitt of Philadelphia, PA and Howard Spates, III of Richmond, VA; twelve grandchildren, Tracy Carbitt (Racine), Arnitra Carbitt, Montavius Spates (Alexus), Jarrod Barner, Brittany Stukes, Denzel Spates, Keimoni Davis, Marjay Davis, Markashia Davis, Arielle Spates, Josh Spates, Adriel Spates and Tierra Taylor, who preceded her in death; seven great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren; five sisters-in- law, Shirley Spates, Wilma Spates and Linda Powell (Ozell) all of Emporia, VA, Betty Archie of Woodbury, NJ and Josephine Johnson of Prince George, VA; a host of relatives and friends.
Doretha was educated in Greensville County Public Schools. She joined Shiloh Baptist church at an early age and attended on a regular basis until her health started to decline. She later moved her membership to Claresville Baptist Church to worship with her daughter and grandkids until she was no longer able to attend. A well-respected person, Doretha was outgoing and willing to help anyone who needed assistance. She loved to shop, entertain, cook and take family vacations especially to Philadelphia to visit her family.
