Doris Copeland Obituary

Doris Marie Copeland was born on Wednesday, July 11, 1945, in Albemarle County, Virginia to the late Leslie and Arine Elridge.

In her youth, Doris accepted Christ and united in Christian Fellowship with Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Jarratt, Virginia, where she remained a member until her demise. She attended Sussex County Public Schools from which she received her high school diploma in 1963. Doris furthered her education at Norfolk State University, receiving an Associate’s Degree soon thereafter. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in May 1987, that allowed her the ability to do the type of work she loved so dearly, which was to educate and help others. Doris was employed as a Registered Nurse with the Norfolk City Health Department, working in various supervisory positions, from which she retired after 30 years of service in April 2001.

In November 1965, Doris was united in matrimony with Robert Copeland. They shared 57 years of marital bliss. This union was blessed with one beautiful daughter, Dawn, born in August 1972. Doris enjoyed life and she loved her family unconditionally. In addition to being a devoted wife and a loving mother, she found the most joy in becoming a grandmother to William Robert Thompson, born in June 2003.

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” On Thursday, March 2, 2023, while in Chesapeake, Virginia, Doris Marie Copeland recalled the refrain “It is well, it is well with my soul” and crossed the great divide, exchanging life for eternal rest. Her seeds are well-sown; her service on earth is complete, and she now experiences the victory and triumph of eternal life.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy of love: her husband, Robert H. Copeland of Chesapeake, Virginia; her daughter, Dawn Thompson and her grandson William R. Thompson, both of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother-in-law, Larry Pritchard of Portsmouth, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Doris Perry and a nephew Douglas Perry, Jr. both of Chesapeake, Virginia; a host of cousins and friends. She will truly be missed by all that came into contact with her.
