On Saturday , March 22, 2025, at the Virginia Health Center, Arlington, Virginia, the Lord called Eddie Lee Sumler to his heavenly home at the blessed age of eight y -five. He was born to the late Leroy and Annie Rooks Sumler on July 7, 1939, in Greensville County, Virginia. His siblings, Catherine Sumler Richardson and Roy Throne, preceded him in death.
Eddie was baptized at an early age and received his education from Greensville County Public Schools. With his 11th -grade education and strong work ethic, he moved to the District of Columbia and attained a Class II Operating Engineers License. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, where he was a devoted engineering supervisor at the International Union of Electrical Workers in Washington, D. C. He loved going to work every day and strived for excellence in every assignment. He was well -respected by his peers and retired after almost twenty years of service.
Eddie met the love of his life in November 1971 and later married Susan (Sue) Suedkamp from Minnesota on January 7, 1978, at Glebe Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia. They were married for fifty -four years and resided in Arlington, Virginia, where they often traveled together on long trips on his Harley -Davidson Electra Glide and Triumph motorcycles. (Two of his favorites from his previous motorcycle collection.) Eddie enjoyed watching sports, especially Monday night football, and sitting in his favorite chair watching college and professional games all weekend. He also spent hours talking to his sisters and close friends on the phone every week, sometimes daily. He loved discussing current events in Washington, D.C., and reminiscing about old times with loved ones and friends.
Eddie is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Susan Suedkamp Sumler; three daughters by a previous marriage with Lizzie Harrison Beard: Jacqueline (Bobby) Bynum of Greensboro, North Carolina, Sha’ron Sumler of Washington, D.C., and Caroline (Norman) Dixson of Spotsylvania, Virginia; three siblings: Nannie Sumler Suiter of Washington, D.C., Julia Sumler Pair (Bernard) of Emporia, Virginia and Lorine Sumler of Washington, D.C.; three Brother s -in -Law of St. Paul, Minnesota and one Brother -in -Law of Albany, New York ; six grandchildren: Tony (Shay) Price; Abel Terry, Atoya King, Heather (Kevin) Taylor, La’ Joyce Terry, and Terin Bethea; twelve great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, including his special cousin (sister) Caroline Sumler (William) Scott and other family members, beloved colleagues and friends.
