Eva Mayes Obituary

EVA DORA MAYES surrendered peacefully her from her suffering to the Lord on March 28, 2014 at 10:57 PM at MCV Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. Eva Dora Mayes was born October 12, 1951 in Greensville County, Emporia, Virginia. She was the twelfth child of fourteen children of the late Deacon Lee Roy Mayes and Deaconess Lucy Ann Carey Mayes who preceded her in death. At an early age she was baptized and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church of Emporia, Virginia. She attended Trinity Baptist Church and Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Greensville County High School in 1970. She began her career in nursing at Greensville Memorial Hospital and continued her training at MCV Nursing School and was employed there for several years. She was a graduate of J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College with an Associate Degree in Science and a Major in Community and Social Services. She received several certificates in Computer Technology with the City of Richmond. Eva's training and skills were not limited to nursing. She was a Teacher, Counselor, Artist, and volunteered a great deal of her time to community programs. She was dedicated, loyal and enjoyed working with children in a variety of projects. She was an Instructional Assistant with the VA Pre-School Initiative; Site Supervisor for the Richmond City Parks & Recreation for five years. Her hobbies consisted of reading, writing, music, gardening and crafts. Eva had a free-spirit and was very professional. She was kind, loving, giving, and had a keen sense of direction. She enhanced her life religiously and her Christian fellowship influenced a wide range of people needing care and attention toward a second chance in life. She would greet you with a smile, a unique trait and legendary of the Mayes Family. Eva Dora loved her family dearly and leaves to cherish her memory Orlando E. Mayes, her only son; two lovely granddaughters, Alanis M. and Marina E. Mayes who she adored; eleven siblings, Josephine Baumgardner, Juliaette Mayes, Lynnette Mayes, Fred Mayes (Debra), Dorothenia Moore (Marcus), Lee Vern Cain, and O'Neal Cary, all of Richmond, VA, Cynthia L. Dorsey (who Eva Dora considered her son's second mother), Mazalene Turner, Rev. Sylvester Mayes (Minnie) all of Emporia, VA, John A. Mayes (Fannie) of Chesapeake, VA, Pastor Stanley Mayes (Patricia), nephew of Petersburg, VA; preceding her in death, Victor Leroy Mayes, Lovette Boone, Vereta Ann Taylor, and Gail Mayes, nieces; one uncle, Samuel J. Mayes of Emporia, VA; three aunts, Bertha Starling, Bessie Lane of Petersburg, VA, Mattie Brannen of Alexander, VA; she leaves one aunt, Florence Mayes who lives in Petersburg, VA with whom she held a special bond. Eva's warm and friendly spirit will be missed by a host of relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors and associates.
