GEORGE MALVIN CARTER was born to Herbert Lee Carter and Alsie Jordan Carter in Southhampton County, Virginia. He is the fifth child of his thirteen brothers and sisters. Throughout Southside Virginia and America in general, everyone knows him as "Red Carter". He is quoted as saying, "When they call me "Red" we go way back and I like that." George began his elementary education in Sussex County, Virginia until the tenth grade. His dad began to talk about moving to another county. Changing high schools caused George a little anguish, because he did not want to leave his friends. However, seeking to make a better life, Herbert Carter decided to move his family to Greensville County where they would establish permanent roots. Later, Mr. Herbert Carter purchased his own farm for his family and he worked as a Future Farmer of America. During those years, George's horticulture skills were ignited. George was eager to share the story that growing up in a big family had a lot of advantages, for everyone was responsible to share the work chores. He and his seven brothers always had fun creating games and toys, swimming in a local pond, hunting and fishing. There was never time to be bored. Education was an important part of George's life. He graduated from the Edward W. Wyatt High School after serving his country in the United States Army. He was a conscientious and determined man on a mission to accomplish his education. George continued to be a well informed person through book knowledge, reading several newspapers, seeing and listening to television news, meeting and talking to people, touring states and other countries. While serving in the US Army, George traveled to Japan and Korea. Fate would have it that he was wounded twice in combat. After his tenure in the US Army where he served in the Korean War, George earned an Honorable Discharge for his heroic military duty. He was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart Medal. He accepted serving his country with pride and dignity. HE WAS A U.S. ARMY WAR HERO! His family, brothers and sister were very proud of his contributions to his country fellowman. George had the career opportunity to work at Allied Chemical Corporations as a Chief Operator. The Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Company afforded him many work experiences in producing their many products on the market today. "Red" Carter was an active and committed person. Serving and helping people seemed to be what he enjoyed. He earned the title of "Mr. Ticket Seller" for selling the most tickets for fish dinners and chicken muddle in the Emporia Greensville County community. He sold tickets like it was a work of art. George was an active member of The Little Shiloh Baptist Church in Emporia, VA. He strived to uplift the name of God in service and deeds. He was a member of the Greensville County Democratic Committee, life member of the Emporia-Greensville NAACP, member of Masonic Acme Lodge 158 Free and Accepted Masons, Inc., member of the American Legion Post 151, and a member of the Greensville County Transportation Safety Commission. George was united in marriage to the late Daisy B. Carter. Cherishing his memory are his children, his daughter Sharon D. Blount (Michael), North Wales, PA, two sons, George Carter Jr. (Iris) - Collegeville, PA, Larry Bonner (Alice Marie), Dinwiddie, VA. Six grandchildren, Brittany Lyn and Michael Jr. Blount, Ashleigh and Jordyn Carter, Toya Hayes and Mario Winfield.
