George Coleman Obituary

George Wayne Coleman, known affectionately as ‘Wayne’, was born on Tuesday, May 8, 1951, in Franklin, Virginia, to the late George Washington Coleman and Eula Mae Baldwin Coleman. He peacefully departed this life on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his home, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, consideration, and dedication.

Wayne attended E. W. Wyatt High School, graduating with the class of 1969. He furthered his education by completing the Louisville Tabulation Computer Center’s College of Computer Science program, earning a Certificate in Computer Programming and Analysis. In 1972, Wayne enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Fuel Specialist.

Throughout his career, Wayne held various positions across multiple companies and organizations, including roles as a substitute teacher with the Greensville County Public School System, and positions at Valley Protein, Inc., Heilig-Meyers Furniture, Schewels Furniture, CYC, Star Value, Simmons Truck Stop, and Geo Group Lawrenceville Correctional Facility. One of his most notable achievements was becoming a jail officer with the Southside Regional Jail in April 2007, where he was remembered for his dedication, proficiency, and kindness.

Wayne married the late Ella Ruth Williams Coleman on November 2, 1974, and together they raised two children: Christopher Lee Coleman and Angela Renae Coleman, both of Emporia, Virginia. A devoted family man, Wayne loved chess, sports, and most of all, the Washington Redskins/Commanders. He cherished his time as a grandfather and caretaker to one of his sisters and a grandson. Wayne enjoyed challenging and debating Cowboys and Eagles fans, always sharing his passion for his team.

He is survived by: his two children, Christopher Lee Coleman and Angela Renae Coleman; his grandchildren, Caleb I. Pestilli of Newmarket, Virginia, Cassidy K. Coleman of Waynesboro, Virginia, and his ride-or-die, Bryson J. Coleman of Emporia, Virginia; his siblings, Louise McMullan of Browns Mill, New Jersey, Edna Barrow of Lawrenceville, Virginia, and Dred Coleman of Norfolk, Virginia; one niece and numerous nephews whom he cherished like brothers; a devoted cousin, Jonnie White of Emporia, Virginia; as well as many other cousins, extended family members, classmates, friends, and the “White City” community. Wayne was a pillar of strength and compassion in his community, always willing to lend a helping hand and offer support to those in need.
