Harold Lawrence 'Buddy' Stewart, Sr.

     HAROLD LAWRENCE ‘BUDDY’ STEWART SR., was born on February 16, 1943, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to Samuel Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Scott Stewart. Surrounded by the love of his family, Buddy peacefully fell asleep in death on November 28, 2025.

    Educated in the Greensville County School System, Buddy grew into a man known for his sharp appearance, warm spirit, and remarkable sense of style. As a young boy, he took great pride in dressing neatly and staying well-groomed—traits that remained with him throughout his life. He loved to dance, and he and his sister Jackie practiced together using the bedpost as their partner. When Buddy stepped onto the dance floor, others often stepped aside to watch him shine.

     On August 15, 1964, Buddy married the love of his life, Peggy , a union that blossomed over 61 beautiful years. Together, they were blessed with five children: Harold Jr. (Kip), Hope Deneen, Marcie Lorene, Darrell Anthony (Tony), and Christopher Oneal (Chris). Buddy was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 27, 2013, a commitment that became the cornerstone of his life.

     Over the years, Buddy worked many jobs, including a period in Brooklyn, New York, before retiring from J.B. Hunt in Emporia, Virginia. He was full of stories—like the family goat that only he could manage, or his instructions to Jackie to have his clothes ironed “just right” before he went to visit Peggy during their courtship. His playful lessons about car makes and models became fond memories, even if Jackie insisted everything was either a Ford or a Chevy.

     Buddy shared a special bond with his sister Jackie, who lovingly cared for him later in life, drawing from the many things he taught her. His family adored him deeply—his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and all who were blessed to know him.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings; one niece; and four nephews.

     Buddy leaves behind a devoted and loving family: his cherished wife Peggy Stewart; his five children, Harold “Kip” Stewart Jr., Hope Stewart, Marcie Mill (Kenny), Darrell Stewart (Karen), and Christopher Stewart (Sheiniquia); fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and six siblings—Jackie Edwards, Beverly Brown (Jeffrey), Ronnie Robinson (Denise), Terry Robinson (Arletha), all of Emporia, Virginia; Theresa Donaldson of Newport News, Virginia; and Sharon Moore of Hampton, Virginia.

     He is also survived by his devoted granddaughter Latoya Denise Stewart, whose unwavering care—accompanying him to appointments, navigating paperwork, and supporting him through chemo and radiation treatments—brought him tremendous comfort. Additional surviving loved ones include his caring sister-in-law Margie Stewart; brothers-in-law Robert “Boot” Moody and Michael “Weesie” Moody; and close family friends Kelly Moody, Earl and Cathy Claiborne, Henry and Helen Gatling, and Marcus and Allison Caudle.

    Buddy will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched, especially Jackie and Beverly, who cared for him with boundless love and dedication.
