Harriet Washington Obituary

HARRIET MANN WASHINGTON was born January 13, 1944 in Emporia, Virginia to the late Henry Mann and Maggie Cheeks-Mann. "Big Ma" as her was affectionately known by her grandchildren and son-in-laws. Harriet received her education through the Greensville County Public Schools Systems. At an early age she accepted Christ and joined Claresville Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her health declined. On April 14, 1962, Big Ma married the late Rommie Washington, this union was blessed with three loving daughters. Throughout her adult life, Harriet worked two jobs to support her family. She was a nanny for prominent families in the Emporia/ Greensville area for over 40 years. Big Ma had an uncommon strength and courage, which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She taught them the importance of hard work, loyalty and family values. Big Ma leaves to cherish her loving memories three daughters and three sons-in-law; Carolyn and Willie Foster, JoAnn and Harold Rodgers and Jeanette and Thomas Walton, one aunt; Mary Gibson (Marvin), four grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law; Lee and Brittany Washington, Ciedric Washington, Joshua Washington and Thomas Walton, two step-granddaughters; Tinetta Foster and Whitney Randolph, one granddaughter at heart; Tiffany Callis, two great-grandchildren; Jai'Shon Callis and O'Leeiyah Washington, three step great-grandchildren; Ahmare Foster, Keyanni Foster and Ni'yma Foster. Big Ma was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister; Leroy Mann, Floyd Mann and Ethel Mann-Cooper. Big Ma also leaves cherishing her memories three surviving sisters and five brothers; Hortense Scott (Vernon), Sallie Cole, Hattie Hunt (Gene), Henry Mann, Jr. (Geneva), Eugene Mann, Eddie Mann (Vernell), George Mann (Shirley) and Alfred Mann. A special niece Carolyn Wright and special nephew; Rashad "Bubba" Powell, a daughter at heart; Hope Thomas, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Big Ma will be loved, missed and forver remembered by all that knew her.
