Hazel Inell Handon was born on April 24, 1935 in Greenville County, Virginia to Thomas and Jennie Gary. She was the youngest sister of eight siblings. Hazel spent her early childhood in Skippers, Virginia and was educated in the Greenville County Public School system until moving north to Maryland. She then attended and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School, as a member of the Class of 1953.
She was previously married to the late William Alfred Handon Sr. and from this union four children were born: Wilma Denise Handon, William Alfred Handon Jr. (preceded in death), Ramon Wayne Handon, and Alan Ricardo Handon.
Hazel was a hard worker; she worked for many years at Murrays Steak House throughout MD, DC and VA. Hazel held seasonal work at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. She had an illustrious career with the Federal Government for 35 years including various positions within Health Education and Welfare (now Health and Human Services) and Department of Defense (Army). She was proud of her position as an early Computer Operator, later a Computer Analyst. She retired in 2002 to relax and enjoy quality time with her family and friends. Shortly after retiring, Hazel returned to her hometown in Skippers, Virginia.
She enjoyed shopping, cooking for family gatherings and music. Hazel loved the sounds of Motown Music including one of her favorite artists Marvin Gaye. Bob Marley was another favorite musician of Hazel’s. Oh yes! Without a doubt, she was a die hard (then) Washington Redskin Fan. Hazel was a dedicated advocate for her community; She was honored to actively volunteer during the 2008 Obama Presidential Campaign in Emporia, VA.
Hazel was very fashionable and enjoyed the finer things in life such as her many Buick automobiles, home fragrances, gold jewelry, designer sunglasses, luxury colognes, and exquisite dining. She enjoyed gardening and upkeeping the family land in Emporia, co-hosting annual family reunions. Due to health challenges, Hazel returned to Maryland to spend quality time with family who she loved and adored.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents Jennie and Thomas Gary and siblings, Catherine Gallion, James Edward Gary, William Henry Gary, Emma Lee Gary-Johnson, Rufus Thomas Gary, and James Wright Sr.
