He slipped away without farewell, He said goodbye to known,
His willing hand could work no more, His work on earth is done.
Gene Thomas Hicks, began his earthly life on Saturday, September 12, 1936 in Greensville County, Virginia. He was born to the parentage of the late Thomas Atkins and Harriett Bertha Hicks. It was later in life that he changed his name to ‘James’, as that is what everyone called him.
James was educated in the Greesnville County Public School System. During his youth, he accepted Christ and joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church of Emporia, Virginia. As life progressed, he was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Dorothy Mae Powell. Spending quality time with his family and friends; fishing; playing board games, such as bingo and checkers; watching Westerns and car races, were all things that he liked to do. He enjoyed the sport of football and watching the games as he was an avid Washington Redskins fan - oh how he loved watching them play!
On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, while in the care of Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center, Emporia, Virginia; James entered sweet eternal rest. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Dorothy Mae Hicks; James was preceded in death by: three sons, Nathaniel, James, Jr. and Darnell; three brothers, Henry Lewis Hicks, Sr., Norfleet ‘Jimbo’ Hicks and Arthur Junior Hicks; two sisters, Shirley Mae Broady and Ivory Pearl ‘Blake’ Hicks; and a daughter-in-law, Rita Hicks.
We thought of you today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and the day before that too. We think of you in silence and often speak your name. Now all we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping and we have you in our hearts: four sons, Dennis Hicks (Elvin), Melvin Hicks, Randal Hicks and Ricky Hicks; two daughters, Patricia Hicks (Terry) and Terri Epps; three sisters, Dorothy Hicks, Ollie Hicks and Carolyn H. Carter (Solomon); three brothers, Roberts Hicks, John Hicks and Waverly Hicks (Emma); one daughter-in-law, Annette Hicks; five sisters-in-law, Iris Hicks, Betty Hicks, Ellen Clayton and Ann Smith; a special family friend, Geraldine Walton; three generations of grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
