Joanne Odom Taylor was born on February 10th, 1950, in Rich Square, North Carolina, to the late Howard Odom, Sr. and Missie Tann Odom. She peacefully departed this life on July 27th, 2024, at her home in Emporia, Virginia.
Joanne spent her early years in Rich Square, North Carolina before relocating to Paterson, New Jersey, in 1965, and eventually settling in Emporia, Virginia, in 2004. She received her education at W.S. Creecy Public School System in Rich Square, North Carolina.
Joanne was a dedicated worker, employed by Heller Candy Company and Paterson Shade Company in Paterson, New Jersey. She also worked at New Jersey Development Center in Totowa, New Jersey, as a Cottage Trained Technician for ten years until her retirement. Joanne was known for her classy, loving, and kind-hearted nature. She had a beautiful soul and was outspoken in her kindness. She cherished her morning routines of coffee and oatmeal, loved cooking, and enjoyed hosting cookouts for family and friends. She was a devoted member of Claresville Baptist Church in Emporia, Virginia, under the leadership of Reverend Claude D. Roberts.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Stanley Lorenza Taylor, nine brothers, Howard, Jr., Robert, Russell, William, Willie Lee, Raymond, Claymond, Coy, and Jesse, two sisters, Esther Hill and Lois Lockett, and one step-daughter, Beverly Jones.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, Jermane Earl Jones, whom she reared from birth; three step-children, Shelia Jones and Lisa Perry of Paterson, New Jersey, and Sylvester Blackwell of Seattle, Washington; six step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Odom, Margaret Odom and three brothers, Purnell Odom, Roy Odom, and James Odom, all of Paterson, New Jersey; two brothers-in-law, Andrew Hill of Prospect, Virginia, and Coy Taylor of Paterson, New Jersey. Joanne’s memory is also cherished by four devoted friends, Nancy Turner, Dianna Pugh, Patricia Hannon, and Vicelle F. Daniels, as well as a special nephew, Glenn Taylor of Emporia, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Joanne will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and warmth will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
