Julia Etta Branch, daughter of the late Johnnie Jasper and Annie Williams Batts was born on January 17,1927 in Emporia, Virginia. She departed this life peacefully, in her sleep, on Saturday morning, April 11, 2020. She was the last remaining siblings of nine children.
Julia received her education from the Public School System in Greensville County. After graduation she later moved to New York City. Julia married Raymond P. Branch and from that union two children were born. Sherman, her eldest son who predeceased her in 1967 and Sheila, her surviving daughter.
In the early 1960s, Julia joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Harlem, NY under the leadership of Pastor Leslie E. Wainwright, until his death. She was currently under the direction of Pastor Calvin G. Sampson. Mrs. Branch was a dedicated member of the Nurses’ Unit and Hospitality Club. She served as their President for three separate year terms. She was also an instructor for The American Red Cross of New York, teaching First Aid and CPR at various churches.
In 1968, she decided to pursue a career in Nursing and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked in the nursery at Metropolitan Hospital, where she cared for newborn babies.
Mrs. Branch was not only a member, but the Secretary and Treasurer of the Polo Grounds Tenant Association, where she lived as a tenant for 52 years. She was very popular and loved by many. She was known for her outspoken personality. Her daughter affectionately called her 'Feisty'. She enjoyed playing bingo and card games with the senior citizens.
In 1985, she proudly became a New York City Police Department Auxiliary Sergeant at the 30th precinct. She served for 20 years, patrolling the neighborhoods in Harlem and at different parades.
Julia leaves to cherish her life memories, her devoted daughter, Sheila Bennett (Myron Sr.- deceased), of Sayreville, New Jersey; two grandsons, Myron Bennett 2nd (Kimberly) of Bronx, NY and Nezman Bennett of New York, New York; three great-grandchildren, Myron Bennett 3rd and Jaden Bennett of Bronx, New York and Heaven Bennett of Perth Amboy, New Jersey; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. She had a long-time friendship with Halice Pickney, Mamie Caldwell and Etta Caryle.
