Lorraine Leonard Obituary

The Life & Legacy of a Great Woman…

She speaks with wisdom,  and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household

and does not eat the bread of idleness.  Her children arise and call her blessed;   her husband also, and he praises her:

“Many women do noble things,   but you surpass them all!”

~ Proverbs 31: 26 - 29

In humble submission to  the will of God, we pause today, to pay tribute to the LIFE, LOVE and LEGACY of Lorraine Virginia Hicks Leonard, who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

Lorraine graced the earth with her angelic presence on Thursday, October 13, 1938.   She was born to the parentage of the late Robert and Carrie Brown Hicks in Emporia, Virginia. Being reared in a Christian family, that knew God and loved serving Him, Lorraine was destined to become a servant of the Lord. Lorraine accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, at an early age  and her faith was an essential part of her life. She was a dedicated member of Bethsaida Baptist Church of Newark, New Jersey, for many years, and a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church of Emporia, Virginia, until her demise.

Lorraine had a heart of gold and loved helping people in any way she could. Even in her later years, she continued to demonstrate her servant heart. One of Lorraine’s favorite hobbies was baking.  Her famous lemon cake was sure to bring a smile to loved one’s faces.

After the clouds, the sunshine; after the winter, the spring; After the shower, the rainbow;  for life is a changeable thing.  After the night, the morning, bidding all darkness cease, After life’s cares and sorrows, the comfort and sweetness of peace.”  On the evening of Saturday, March 12, 2022, Lorraine  was received into the loving arms of God; while in the serenity of her home, surrounded by family.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by:  her beloved husband, James Leonard Sr.; sister, Lilly Mae Plumb; brothers, Curtis Hicks, Robert ‘Buster’ Hicks, Cleveland Hicks Sr., John Hicks and Morris Hicks; and her  beloved grandson, Jamier Leonard.

Your life was full of loving deeds, forever thoughtful of our special needs. Today and tomorrow, our whole life through, we will always love and cherish you. Lorraine’s sweet spirit, caring heart and generosity will long be remembered by all those whose  lives she touched:  four sons, Irving (Queenell) Leonard, James (Dale) Leonard, Dennis (Cindy) Leonard and Wayne (Michelle) Leonard; two brothers, Arthur (Bertha) Hicks and Matthew (Josephine) Allen; thirteen grandchildren, Sherik (Rudiana) Leonard, Katrina (Sherrod) Clifton, Marquita Leonard, Porché (Iven) Leonard, Sabrina (Caleb) Holliman, Alexis Leonard, Justin Leonard, Cierra Leonard, Tatiana Leonard, Ervin Leonard, Khiima Williamson, Shameka Williamson and Tearra Miller; nineteen great-grandchildren;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, whom loved her dearly.
