Obituary

Mary Willie Hicks, the fifth child of the late Queen and Joe Hicks, Sr. , was born September 4, 1946 in Skippers, Virginia.  Mary  was educated in the Greensville County Public Schools, graduating from the former Edward W. Wyatt High School in 1964.  She continued to advance in education, starting with completing the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Southside Virginia Community College; a Florist Certificate from Bland’s Flower Shop in Petersburg, Virginia, and an Electrical Certificate from Verizon.  She had an extended  professional career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at The McGuire VA Medical Center and medical facilities throughout Virginia.

Mary was a life long member of  Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she was baptized and received Jesus. Mary had an outgoing personality and eagerly served in several capacities at Jerusalem. She was a member of the Mass Choir and the Holy Majestics.  As an entrepreneur, she opened a Flower Shop on Halifax Street in Emporia in 2008.  She created beautiful floral arrangements for weddings, funerals and any other occasions as requested.  Mary had a really big heart and shared whatever she had, and as such, her Flower Shop business folded because she gave away more arrangements than she sold.  She loved arranging flowers and spent time teaching others the craft of floral arranging.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing .  She loved to play Bingo and became an expert player.  She would often  lure others into the Bingo game.  She usually won the  money, and stayed until closing.

Mary Willie was preceded in death by one son, Vernon J. Hicks; Her parents, Queen and Joe Hicks; five brothers: Kelly, Matthew Lee, Joe Jr., Cephus, Romie; Five sisters: Nellie Mae, Gloriadine, Brenda Sue, Queen and Lilly Pearl.

Mary Willie leaves three children: Dwayne Hicks, Antionette Pearson (Morris); Cornelius Hicks, known as Munday (Pam). Six grandchildren: Michael Hicks, Travis Hicks, Natasha Hicks, DeMartin Hicks, Dedrick Williams, Jakari Hicks.  Eight great–grandchildren: Shakiyah Hicks, Kenya Hicks, Kennedy Hicks, Taylor Hicks, Lei’Onni Callis, Amir Stephens, Addilyn Williams, Kyrie Williams. Three siblings: James R. Miles, Priscilla Hicks, William D. Hicks.  One aunt: Viola Roberts; three sister-in-laws; one brother-in-law; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends who will miss Mary Willie dearly.
