Mary Louise Jones was born in Emporia, Greensville County, Virginia, on September 14, 1931, to the loving parents of the late John and Ethel Williams. She departed her earthly life on October 3, 2022, at the Riddle Hospital, in Media, Pennsylvania, after a lengthy illness and a recent short hospital stay with complications. She was blessed to have seven brothers and thirteen sisters (which includes two grandchildren reared) ; there are eight surviving Williams family sisters and two surviving brothers.
Affectionately, many of her siblings called her “Mary Jones” and her grandchildren called her “Nana.” She enjoyed family life and appreciated all her family ties. She exhibited love for everyone and had a long-lasting love for the times that brought family members together for any kind of celebration. She, too, loved to extend care and great hospitality to others in whatever role or capacity she could. She had strong work ethics and a spirit of excellence which promoted her aspirations to be one of perfectionism in everything she did. After moving to Norfolk in her early young adult life she married the late Robert E. C. Jones, Sr., whom in the succeeding years they together reared four children until their children’s independent adult lives.
Mary Jones was very fond of plants and flowers. She had a special touch for nurturing any kind of seedling into mature gardens and houseplants. In fact, she was a self-inspired horticulturist. Everyone who knew her called upon her for help and information about caring for plants and flower gardens. Mary’s Christian roots and long-standing active engagement in the Lord’s church kept her grounded in the faith. Her commitment to Christ propelled her desires to serve and mentor others in her local church and community. In her early adult years, she was a faithful member at the Garden of Prayer Church of God in Christ in Norfolk. In her latter adult years, she attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Norfolk—for forty-five years—until such time which she relocated to Philadelphia to live in company with her oldest daughter, “Patty.” After settling in Philadelphia, in the fall of 2015, Mary Jones established her local church membership at Theist Temple Church of God in Christ, Norristown, Pennsylvania, pastored by Elder Robert E.C. Jones, Jr., her eldest son, until her demise.
During her young adult life, she worked at Norfolk Public Schools in food services and the City of Norfolk Police Department as a School Crossing Guard for 25 years (August 1977 – August 2002). She later also obtained a position in environmental service at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. She, ultimately, retired from her position as a Crossing Guard after serving several generations—and later retired from the hospital where she worked for more than 20 years. She lived a comfortable life.
Mary Jones had an extraordinary gift and talent in sewing, cooking, and taking care of every family need as a nurturing mom—most of which inherent with her rich and devoted life spent on the family farm as a Williams family member in Emporia. Today, her mortal body has returned home for a final resting while her spirit has been released triumphantly into the arms of Jesus, her Lord and Savior. No more pain. No more suffering. No earthly burdens or cares.
“…whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:19b
