She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all!”
~ Proverbs 31: 26 - 29
Mary Lucy Jones Powell, daughter of the late Hurley and Celestine Jones, began her journey through life on Monday, July 28, 1947 in Southampton County, Virginia.
Mary was educated in the Southampton County School System. Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and united in Christian Fellowship with the Pleasant Plain Baptist Church of Drewryville, Virginia, where she served as a member of the choir. One of her favorite songs, we recall her reminiscing on, was, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”. That melody always seemed to put a smile on her face.
Mary was loved and adored by all who knew her. She was blessed with a large and loving family. In August of 1967, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to her childhood sweetheart, Luther J. Powell, Sr. Together they reared four children, with patience, discipline and humility. She taught them to be kind, respectful and most importantly, compassionate.
Mary was always willing to lend a helping hand. She often expressed her love through preparing delicious hot meals that she shared with her family and friends alike. You could never leave her home hungry! She will truly be missed by all whose lives she touched.
On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, God in His infinite wisdom, dispatched one of His angels to escort Mary into His marvelous light. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luther J. Powell, Sr.
Precious memories, Oh how they will forever linger in the hearts of: three daughters, Jacqueline Mason and Virginia Powell (Jerry) both of Emporia, Virginia and Ann Cervi (Michael) of Venice, Florida; one son, Luther J. Powell, Jr. of Emporia, Virginia; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Phillip S. Jones of Norfolk, Virginia; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mrs. Powell's tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
