MARY ELIZABETH (KINDRED) WOOD was born on September 5, 1935, in Emporia, Virginia, to the late Rufus and Bertha “Bi” Kindred. Mary departed this life on November 4, 2020 at Prodigy Transitional Rehab in Tarboro, North Carolina.
Mary attended public school in Greensville County. She joined Salem Baptist Church at an early age until she moved to Washington, DC with her three children and grandson. She relocated to Prince George County, MD where she joined Whosoever Will Church of God. There she served on the usher board in addition to serving in the roll of Deaconess and Minister. She was lovely known as “Minister Wood” or “Mother Wood”.
She was a nurturing and loving mother as well as a grandmother, great grandmother and great, great-grandmother to her daughters; Christine (Irving), Pattie (David) and Carolyn; her grandchildren, Corey and Trina (Bennie); her great grandchildren, Neisha, Tyana (Delaney), Carlos (CJ) and Kammy; her great, great-grandchildren, Sa’Vion and Carlizze. She loved and cared so much for her entire family. Mary was an avid reader; she loved to color and enjoyed her word searches. She also loved to mispronounce words/names, “ask her nephew Jerry”.
When Mary moved to Washington, DC she worked at the Washington Hilton Hotel until retirement. She loved to tell the story of the day when Ronald Reagan was shot. She cleaned rooms of various movie stars and would say” some were good tippers, and some were cheap.” She even taught her General Manager how to clean windows. After retirement she moved back to Emporia, VA where she rejoined Salem Baptist Church and served as an Usher and Deaconess. In 2007 she moved to Rocky Mount to be with her daughters. Several years later she joined Showers of Blessings Christian Center.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha “Bi” and Rufus Kindred; sister, Lee Bertha Moore; brother, Earl Moore and son-in-law, David Agee. She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Christine (Irving) Cousins, Pattie Agee and Carolyn Wood; two sisters, Fannie Kindred and JoAnn (Tommy) Harris; three brothers, Brutus Moore Sr. (Vernita) Larry Moore and Tyrone Moore; two grandchildren, Corey Wood and Katrina (Bennie) Clark; four great-grandchildren, Janeisha Green, Tyana (Delaney) Miles, Carlos Marshall (CJ) and Kameron Wood; two great, great-grandchildren, Sa’Vion Green and Carlizze Brashears; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
