Morris Murphy Obituary

Morris Bert Murphy was born Wednesday, August 17, 1932 in Southampton County, Virginia to the parentage of the late Alphea Lester Murphy and Elizabeth H. Murphy. His father later remarried, Ruth Britt, whom Morris and his siblings lovingly called ‘Mother/Mrs. Ruth’.

Morris was employed with American Box Company and later Georgia Pacific of Emporia, Virginia, until his retirement. At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Rising Star Baptist Church, Branchville, Virginia, where he served faithfully until his health began to fail.

‘Bert’, as he was affectionately called, loved fishing, visiting his friends, sitting at the service station watching the cars go by, while holding a conversation for hours, no matter what the subject - he was the man to see if you wanted to talk.

On Sunday, August 21, 2022, Morris Bert Murphy was called home to be with the Lord. In addition to his parents, Alphea and Elizabeth and mother-at-heart, Ruth, he was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Gladys Murphy; four sisters, whom he loved dearly, Vernell Griffin (James, Sr.), Ruby Hagins (Sterling), Hattie Dugger and Margaret Roach and one awesome brother, Al Smith Murphy (Erma).

He leaves to cherish his fond memories: his devoted daughter, Diane Boone, who stood by him until the end; his grandchildren, whom he adored with all of his heart, Demetria Boone of Emporia, Virginia and Pondaza Boone (Tina) of Grovetown, Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Raekwon and Jawaan Cook and Xzavier Avent all of Emporia, that made his eyes light up when he saw them, Camryn and August Boone both of Grovetown, Georgia; one great, great-granddaughter, Malaysia Crowder Cook of Petersburg, Virginia; his sisters, Carolyn Christian and Joyce Ford both of Richmond, Virginia and Yvonne Murphy of New York; son-at-heart, Ronald Boone (Isabelle) of Emporia, Virginia; two brothers-in-law, Matthew Roach and Leon Ford; two devoted nieces, Valerie Dennis and Gwendolyn Murphy-Johnson, who aided in his care and visited with their uncle until the end; his Chef, Lisa Hines, who was always fixing him a plate; a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins that he adored.

Bert enjoyed visits from his nephew, Alphea over the years and weekly visits from his niece, Dawn Murphy, until they both relocated to Colorado. Bert also leaves behind devoted friends, Mr. Jack Jones and his wife. Mr. Jack would come by everyday to ensure he was okay, Adolph Robinson, Michael Wells, Ed and Theary Andrews.
