“If I can help somebody as I travel along,
If I can help somebody in a word or a song
If I can help somebody from doing wrong,
No, my living shall not be in vain”
Moses E. Lee Odom, born November 13, 1946, in Emporia, VA, to the late Veto Odom and Evelyn Holmes Odom, passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 2024, in Franklin, Michigan, as he was concluding a three-week cross-country vacation. He is now reunited in heaven with his parents, thirteen siblings—Margaret, Flossie, Simon, Charlotte, Elijah, Winfield, Haywood, James, Bendolye, Bill, Gladys, Paul, and Henry—and his grandson Johnathan M. Brown.
At the age of 16, Moses left the comforts of home, driven by a thirst for adventure and a desire to change his life. Despite having only an eighth-grade education, he ventured into the unknown with courage and determination, ultimately achieving remarkable success through his passion and resilience.
Moses’s career was diverse and impactful. He began with Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, and spent 43 years at PEPCO, retiring after a long and dedicated service. He also owned and operated his own taxi service for over 43 years, delighting passengers with tours of the D.C. metropolitan area. Known for his exceptional work ethic, Moses rarely missed a day at work.
A beacon of joy, Moses relished every moment with family and friends, whether fishing, traveling, or visiting Michigan—a state he particularly loved. He enjoyed attending family reunions, decorating and remodeling his home, and nurturing his garden with passion. Moses was always eager to connect with others and found joy in frequent visits to casinos.
One of Moses’s greatest joys was reviving the engine of his beloved 1970 Mark 1 Ford Mustang. The car was not just a vehicle but a source of passion and escape. He was also a dedicated fan of the Washington Redskins/Commanders, cheering them on with pride.
Moses embraced the holiday season with unparalleled enthusiasm, transforming his home into a festive wonderland. His creative spirit earned him the Blue Ribbon for the most beautifully decorated home in his neighborhood. He cherished sending out personal greeting cards, maintaining connections with friends and family.
He leaves behind his two children, LaShelle Denise Brown (Garry Leroy Brown) and Ein Lee Martin Odom (LaTisha); five grandchildren: Lauren D. Brown, Chela N. Brown, Garry L. Brown Jr., Xavier L.M. Odom, and Jayce E.A. Odom; and two aunts, Mattie Turner and Annette Holmes. He is also survived by his uncle, Thomas Jones; siblings Mattrue Washington, Abraham (Teloria) Julix Nix, Joseph (Doris), Eddie, Corene Odom-Morgan, and Dorothy Webb (Alexander); and five sisters-in-law: Thelma, Merdredan, Rena, Debra, Angela, and Regina. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former co-workers.
Moses is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Cathryn J. Odom, and his special friend and companion, Debra Gilliam, who brought warmth and joy into his life.
Moses E. Lee Odom was more than a name; he was a symbol of love and compassion. As a devoted father, nurturing grandfather, beloved brother, cherished cousin, and steadfast guardian, his spirit of kindness touched everyone he met. He embraced the young with warmth and wisdom, and showed deep respect and tenderness to the elderly. Moses’s legacy is one of boundless love, leaving an enduring mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
