Rodney Daren Wilkins, was born September 22, 1969 in Emporia, Virginia to Raymond Vernon Wilkins and the late Bernice Lazine Epps-Burnett. Rodney spent his youth and early teen years in Richmond, Virginia, where he attended elementary and junior high school. In 1984, he moved with his mother and sister, Tracy Melissa Wilkins, to Middletown, Connecticut, when Bernice accepted a position with Traveler’s Insurance Company. Connecticut would remain his home for the next 14 years. He attended East Hartford High School and later completed a Certificate in Automotive Mechanics from Hartford Technical Institute.
Rodney’s family expanded significantly during his young adult years. His mother remarried and in the ensuing years Rodney enjoyed a close and loving relationship with his stepfather, Michael Reddick Burnett and his little brother, Michael Edward Burnett. The five of them became a loving, blended family. It was also in Connecticut that Rodney met his former wife, the late Mary Landry. His son, Rodney Daren Wilkins, Jr. was born of their union, whom he raised to be a great young man like his father. His step-daughter Porsha Lewis completed the new family.
Rodney returned to his native Virginia in 1997. He held a number of positions in the years that followed with various companies, including Marva Maid. Later in life, working as a team with his sister, Rodney made several successful Real Estate investments. At the time of his passing, Rodney was successfully running his own business and was the sole owner and operator of FAAM Trucking.
Rodney was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Lazine Epps-Burnett; his stepfather, Michael Reddick Burnett; his little brother, Michael Edward Burnett; and his ex-wife, Mary Landry.
He is lovingly survived by: his son, Rodney Daren Wilkins, Jr.; his step-daughter, Porsha Lewis; his father, Raymond Vernon Wilkins; his sister, Tracy Melissa Wilkins; two nieces, Daija Lazine Wilkins and Mya Danielle Jones; one nephew, Maquan Daren Wilkins; five aunts; one uncle; and a host of cousins and friends.
These are but a few of the facts of Rodney’s life. To those family and friends who knew and loved him dearly, he was hard working, loving, family-oriented, protective and generous. He gave of his time, his love, and his resources to those whom he loved. His modesty sometimes precluded him from recognizing the talents that he did possess, especially his business acumen. We will always remember the twinkle in his eyes and the mischievous grin that remained with him throughout his life.
