Stella 'Brenda' Hines Obituary

“All my life YOU have been faithful. All my life YOU have been so, so good.

With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.”

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of Stella W. “Brenda” Hines, who departed this earthly life on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025. Born on Wednesday, October 29th, 1952, to the late Mary Celestine and Floyd “Jack” Wiggins, Sr., Stella was a radiant soul whose presence was a gift to all who knew her.

She was baptized at Salem Church in Emporia, Virginia, where her foundation in faith was planted early and remained a guiding light throughout her life. A proud product of the Greensville County School System, Stella formed many meaningful connections—including a cherished lifelong friendship with Linda Davis, beginning in the first grade. She graduated from E.W. Wyatt High School, setting out into the world with confidence and determination.

In 1970, Stella relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where she began her professional career as a bank auditor on Wall Street. During her  time there, she welcomed her first two children, Jaycee (1970) and Derrick (1973), who would become the center of her world. She returned to Virginia in 1980, where she later gave birth to her beloved daughter, Bridgette, and transitioned into a career in hospitality and customer service.

Never one to shy away from new challenges, Stella made a bold and inspiring career move in the mid-1990s by earning her Class A Commercial Driver’s License. She drove for Tour Time and Martz, combining her love for travel with her exceptional work ethic. Later, she discovered her true calling in childcare, serving as a devoted nanny for over 25 years to several loving families—including the Goldings, Roudabushes, Smiths, Spivacks, Hughes, and Lowerys. Her nurturing spirit, patience, and ability to connect with children left an indelible mark on countless young lives.

In 1999, Stella married Paul Hines, and together they shared 24 wonderful years. Their union was a testament to love, companionship, and mutual respect.

One of Stella’s greatest joys was cooking—a passion that brought people together and filled her home with warmth and laughter. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, love, and creativity. Whether she was preparing her signature dirty rice, wraps, rice pudding, or famous pasta salad, every dish was made with heart and soul. Through food, she nurtured not just bodies but relationships and memories.

Beyond her roles as a mother, sister, friend, and caregiver, Stella will be remembered as a vibrant, dynamic woman. She lived life boldly—always with a spark in her eye, a quick wit on her tongue, and a wardrobe that radiated her signature flair. Her honesty was refreshing, her laughter contagious, and her spirit unforgettable.

In her final days, Stella was lovingly cared for by her dear friend Edward Boone, devoted cousin May, and beloved sister-in-law Andrei. Their unwavering support brought her peace and comfort, surrounded by those she loved most.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings: Clyde Whitfield, Mary Battle, Calvin Wiggins, Charles Wiggins, and Clifton Wiggins.
