Remembering Susie...
“Remembering you is easy, we do it everyday. Missing you is a heartache, which will never go away.”
Today, we pause to pay tribute to the memory of Susie Hortense High Jones, who was a loving mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend. She was one who loved her family with all her heart, and not only nurtured her family, but enriched the lives of many.
On Friday, June 17, 1932, God blessed Jake and Dora Scott High with a beautiful baby girl, to love, nurture and adore. These loving parents went on to name their exuberant blessing, Susie Hortense. While growing up in the High residence, Susie attended the Greensville County Public School System in Virginia.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined the Cool Spring Missionary Baptist Church of Gaston. Seeing the need to continue to deepen her spiritual gifts, she later joined the Shearin Chapel Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
“Sue”, as she was affectionately called, met and later united in Holy Matrimony to Willie J. Jones. This union was blessed with ten children, many grand and great grandchildren. Seeing the need to provide for her family, she became gainfully employed with W.R. Grace and worked there for many years until her retirement in 1993.
In Sue’s later years her mobility was impacted; however, this by no means deterred her from doing what she loved most, and that was fellowshipping with friends and family. She traveled and shopped, as though she had no limits. Very seldom, would you see her without some sort of jewelry and her nails done. Her fashion sense was stellar and her heart golden.
Wings...Are carved surfaces that lift…Wings enable you to soar beyond all your self-imposed restrictions and take you to the lofty heights you dare to dream of. Wings can offer protection and comfort, as in “under one’s wing.” Wings remind us of the angels that guard and guide us from above, and of those angels that walk among us. Wings remind us that it is in our power to be an angel to the next person, who may just happen to need one. Anything is possible, when you have wings. On Tuesday, June 9, 2020, while in the serenity of her home, Susie received “two wings to veil her face, two wings to veil her feet and two wings to fly away, so the world could no longer do her any harm”. She is now reunited with those who preceded her in death: her parents, husband and two children; Donati R. High, Sr. and Debra J. Bennett.
Though the clouds may hang over, there will be a brighter day. In that land that they call heaven, God shall wipe all tears away. We who remain with faith and assurance that God will see us through are: her children, Mertikae (Sherman) Hill of Randallstown, Maryland, Willie Sue (Charles) Green of Swan Quarter, North Carolina, Dexter (Vivian) Jones of Littleton, North Carolina, Terrie (Sherman) Wilkins of Jarratt, Virginia, Terrance (LaKasia) Jones of Lake City, Florida, Nolita (Alvin) Lundy of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Lolita (Frank) McNair of Gaston, North Carolina and Marcus (Erika) Jones of Enfield, North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Vanessa High of Emporia, Virginia; son-in-law, James Bennett of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; eighteen grandchildren, Latanya, Shannon, Yannah, Donati, Jr., Chad, Erica, Damien, Karma, Dedric, Jonathan, Travis, Brittney, Jasmine, Tasheena, Brandon, Jamaria, Marquis and MaKayla; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Kaela, Kaja, Harrison, Charleston, Leilani, Chase, Javell, Jeremiah, Cyane, Kamaree, Lexie, Cali, Cazlyn, Cassi, Cannen, Madison, Jace, Miley, Bella, Dameshia, Daja, Sanaa and Dedric, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Mary Moore, Annie Taylor, Barbara Solomon, Mandelin Gilliam, Agnes Moody, Wilhemenia Jones and Gwendolyn High; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
