For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be
compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
~Romans 8: 18
Valery Leavon Powell, daughter of the late Luther and Lucy Hudson Powell, entered this world on October 16th, 1952, in Greensville County, Virginia. She embraced Christianity early in life and found fellowship at Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Emporia, Virginia, where she served diligently in the Usher’s Ministry. Valery’s educational journey took place within the Greensville County School System, culminating in her graduation with pride as part of the class of 1971.
A diligent and committed worker, Valery held various positions, including roles at Craddock Terry Shoe Factory and Purdue. Though she was a woman of few words, her infectious smile touched many hearts. Known for her caring nature, Valery was always ready to lend a helping hand. She found joy in cooking and baking her special desserts, especially for her beloved family, and cherished moments spent playing bingo. However, her greatest joy and accomplishment came from nurturing and loving her son.
On April 22nd, 2024, while in the care of Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family, Valery peacefully departed this earthly life, after a brief illness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Nathan Powell, whom she tenderly cared for during his illness.
Valery will be fondly remembered by her devoted son, Shawn Powell, and his wife Veronica; her grandchildren, Aushaun and Kamea Powell; her loving sister, Phillis Powell; her brothers, Rochester Powell and Luther Junius Powell; her dedicated niece and daughter-at-heart, Pamela Brown, and husband Jerry; her aunts, Catherine Claiborne and Willie Bea Rawlings, along with husband Calvin; her uncle, William Lee; her great-nephew, Jerry Brown, Jr., who shared her birthday; her great-niece, Jada Brown; her great-great-niece, Alaya Michael; her special cousin, Odella Thomas; a host of cousins, relatives, friends, and former colleagues whose lives she touched with her warmth and kindness. Valery’s legacy of love and compassion will forever reside in the hearts of those she touched.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Ms. Powell's tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
